Trip advisor

Day 1

Day 2

This stretch of road was formed during the French concession, thus boasting a famous row of European style buildings, housing many modern shops like Starbucks and other household brands like Shanghai Tang. What strikes us most is the beauty of the buildings. However, something disappointing is that the buildings are just a facade, as its interior historical culture is all gone, leaving us with only an empty shell of what it was in the previous centuries. It is still an amazing and beautiful place one simply has to visit.

The urban planning exhibition shows a great amount of detail of how olden shanghai has improved to one of the world's most famous cities. It shows the different type of architecture China owns throughout their long years of history. What we find fascinating about this attraction is that how detailed the mini landscape of modern shanghai is. It give us a clearer picture in mind of the bird's eyes view of shanghai. It was fascinating. But we decided to keep the rating as 3/5 as it did not capture the attention of the tourist. Many were sitting down on the benches and there isn't any guides that maybe give you a enticing story about urban planning. Thus, we feel it isn't really a good place to increase your knowledge of china. 3/5

A hotpot restaurant that not only serves food that tourist savour after the meal,it also provides good service. The routine of serving is really detailed. When one is eating a meal that cause one's spectacles to be blurry the restaurant immediately gave us a small cloth to wipe our glasses.Even for girls with long hair who would have thought u could actually eat without additional ingredients. We were treated in royalty. The service there was better than best as the restaurant's mentality is not to just serve food but serve as if their customers were their best of friends. The friends and courteous approach that the waiter and waitresses gave us was heartwarming and left an deep impression on us.It was as if we were eating at home with our families. Such impact has caused not to say 5/5 or even 10/5 .

Day 3

This tea house is located in a park, its entrance facing a scenic river. Inside, the interior design resembles a traditional tea house back during the dynastic years. The loud noises and the crowdedness inside the eatery might feel suffocating and unruly for some, but it is just like a "kopi" shop in the singapore, except maybe with more antique styled chairs, and noisier. After you have ordered, food just keeps being served. For breakfast, the food items can be summed up into a few categories: carbohydrates, and the rest. About half of the meal were carbohydrate  food items, like buns. There were meat buns, vegetable buns, delicious cake and even an enormous bun filled with soup and meat, where a straw is needed to drink the soup before consuming the meat. The food portions were very big though, and majority of us could not even finish half of our meal, despite how delicious the food seemed. The big portions is due to the fact that the people in Yangzhou only eat two meals, breakfast and dinner, thus the heavy meal. However, since us Singaporeans have different lifestyle habits, and eat lighter breakfasts, the breakfast provided by the tea house were a little too much for us.

QianQiuFenDai performance:
A special performance put up by a few elegant and graceful ladies. These ladies showcased their Yangzhou dialect, along with beautiful performances of some chinese orchestral instruments, singing and dancing. Everyone was really absorbed into watching the show. It had been a tired and hectic day for us so we really enjoyed the performance. Some of us were really tired and were unable to concentrate on the performance but the others were happily clapping along with the performers. Therefore, we rated this as 4/5.

Day4

Going to the school in Yangzhou has been a very refreshing and unique experience for us. We learnt many new things and brought back many memories from the school back to Singapore. Some things we learnt were the good learning attitudes the students had. They sat with their backs straight and listen attentively in the class, something Singapore students can rarely accomplish. The students also participate quite actively in class, answering the teacher when the teacher poses a question. I hope to be able to pick up and learn the same good, eager learning attitude they have. In china, a lot of emphasis is placed on academics. Students spend majority of their time and effort on their studies, so as to score well and get into their dream schools. Competition is very stiff in china, and with limited spaces in desirable schools, it is no wonder the students are much more focused on their academics than singapore students, who can enter schools not just by academics but by holistic aspects too. The school building itself is very spacious and big, with an enormous track and even a four-storey high library, a dreamland for athletes and book-lovers. However one downslide of the school is the toilets. It is not as clean or modern as ours back in singapore. Their toilets did not have mirrors either. All these facilities lacking in their toilets as compared with ours is most probably to save the unnecessary time spent in toilets, like checking appearances. From our two-day visit to the school, we learn many new things like the habits and behaviours of our Chinese peers and the Chinese culture too, like the dragon-boat festively which the school kindly organised activities for us to learn more about our Chinese traditional festival. Overall, it had been a wonderful experience.

Lushi mansion
The mansion was really well designed. There were lanterns used as a decoration at night. We had our dinner at the Lushi mansion. The food that was served was Yangzhou's traditional food. We enjoyed the taste a lot and it was one of the best meals we had in China. Thus, we rated it a 5/5.

Riding along this river is a wonderful and breathtaking experience. Along the banks are mainly willow trees, and both modern and historical buildings. There were buildings like hotels and temples, all which amplified to the beautiful scenery. On the boat, not only can you enjoy the beautiful scenery, there is also an introduction to the river, via a recording through the intercom, for example, the bridges spanning across the river. There are in total 6 bridges, one if which still under construction. Each have a unique story behind their construction, just like the river itself, which was a favourite attraction to previous emperors. If it even has the ability to charm the emperors of china, it would definitely charm all tourists visiting.

Day 5

Day 6

Paper Cutting Museum
It was the first time for us to use a pair of paper cutting scissors. We learnt the proper method on how to use the scissors. Paper cutting required lots of attention and care in order to cut out the perfect shape so some of us were not able to carry out the paper cutting lesson properly. The instructors taught us well and even helped some of us if we were lacking behind. The designs we cut out were really pretty and much better than that of an amateur's, therefore we rated this experience as a 4/5

Car enthusiast would definitely love this trip to shanghai's Volkswagen tour around their car factory. When we entered the big hall of the Volkswagen office it was spectacular as what greet us is cars not any cars but Volkswagen. The tour guide gave us an enriching talk about their company and even a non car enthusiast can't help but also be shock at the magnificent view and information they are hearing. When entering the car assembly room whereby they fix the Volkswagen car one would be just angry at the restriction of photography. Rows and rows of cars are being manufactured in front of our faces. To conclude this amazing tour using three words magnificent, cool and car-fabulous. It was definitely enriching as it thought us the transport we see everyday actually go through so many small little detail of hard work's of many. Learn to cherish.

Day 7

Faster train on earth. Would it feel as if we on a roller coaster? Will I fly off my seat? No it was a comfortable 3 hour ride. Why 5/5 ? Unlike the MRTs that a Singaporean is use to it was actually a luxury to be on a cozy chair while we travel in top speed. While enjoying music and have a snack one could actually take a break off one's busy schedule of that short period of amount of time. If you are disappointed your friend is seating behind you, fear not u could switch your chair around such that you can talk to your friend face to face. Also, they provided a clean toilet to be use by commuters who have an urgent need to answer the call of nature. Even though it might be fast trip it is also a comfortable and relax experience.

Reflection

This 7D6N trip to Shanghai/Yangzhou had been a really eventful and memorable one for me. Although I had been to China countless times, this was actually my first time going overseas all by myself with my classmates. Before the trip, my parents had been instructing me on how much to spend when I was there, how to tidy up my clothes. At first, I didn't listen fully them as I felt like they were saying useless things. However, when I got there I found out that I had to be independent, I couldn't rely on my parents anymore and I have to do things for myself, I have to make the right choices for myself. I am known for being indecisive sometimes so this trip has actually helped me a lot in making the right choices. Also, being far away from our parents, makes us cherish them much more. Everyday, every minute, we would think of them. We would miss their love and care. When we fall sick, they would be there to take care of us. But now, we have to take care of ourselves.
As we spend more time with our friends, the more we know them, the closer or worse our friendship gets. From this trip, we have learnt not only the good but also the bad points of our friend's personalities. We may quarrel or even fight sometimes, but the amount of time we spend together makes up for our friendship, allowing us to bond more as a class.
During this trip, we had visited many places with breathtaking sceneries which had interesting histories. I really enjoyed the trip to the Yipu garden in Yangzhou. Since it was summer when we went to Yangzhou, the flowers had already bloomed. The color contrast of the different flowers together was really unforgettable. The garden has a dynastic feel to it. It covers a very large area which is filled with green. It has many interesting plants. For example, the tour guide had introduced us to a tree which had once been struck by lightning. It was still alive but had not been able to grow well. Therefore, another tiny tree was grown beside it as support to allow this tree to continue living on. To me, this portrays love between two family members. When the older generation's health is deteriorating from illness, the younger one will take care of him or her. I feel that this is a really touching scene.
In this garden, there is also a bridge which is designed in a zig-zag manner. One of the meaning behind this bridge's structure is to ward off ghosts as it is believed that such supernatural creatures move only in one direction so they would be unable to cross the bridge. I thought that this was really cool, it was my first time seeing something like this.
My favorite dining area was the "HaiDiLao" restaurant. Their service was perfect. They attended to every single one of our needs. They gave us rubber bands to tie our hair when we eat so that our hair would not fall into our food. They gave us glasses cloths in case our glasses gets fogged up by the steam from the hotpot. Other than that, they escorted us from our tour bus to our seats, and if we wanted to use the toilet, they would escort us there. Not to mention, their toilets are actually really clean. When you come out of the toilet. One of the waitress will stand there and turn the tap for us to wash our hands. Afterwards she would hand us a tissue napkin for us to dry our hands. Then, she would bring us back to our tables. One thing i really like about this restaurant is how their workers treat their customers. Usually in other restaurants, the workers look unhappy with their jobs. But in this restaurant, their smiles are really sincere. Showing how much they want to serve us, how much they like and enjoy working here. I respect their love for this job and I look up to them. Other than this, they also have a child play area for young children, they also have a television located in the dining area for parents to watch their children so they would feel at ease knowing how their child is doing in the playroom. They also have free manicure services for people who have finished dining. The services of this restaurant has really amazed me, thus I would never forget this experience.
After this trip, I started to understand the differences between China and Singapore. I made many friends from Yangzhou and contacted them almost everyday. I began to cherish Singapore's facilities more, i learnt about Yangzhou's history and also about Shanghai's. If I had a chance I would love to go back to Yangzhou, to relive the memories I had from this trip, to meet with my Yangzhou friends once again.

OELP REFLECTION~Lixian

OELP 2014 to Shanghai and Yangzhou has been an eyeopener for me. As a girl that has never set foot in China, this trip was indeed memorable and fun. Before this trip, I had an image of China as being very polluted in environment and corrupted in government. The Chinese in my mind were extremely rude and inconsiderate. To be honest, I did not want to visit China at all. However, a great deal changed after this trip. I have learnt to realize that China is a beautiful country rich in culture and history.

Firstly, Shanghai was once a concession area for the foreigners due to wars and treaties in the late Qing dynasty. Hence, the buildings in Shanghai appeared to be more western influenced. The Chinese did not get rid of all these significant buildings. They realized that these buildings represent Shanghai history. Each building represents one country near the Huang Pu Jiang. All these buildings were standing tall and sharing their story to everybody about Shanghai's history. Also, there is Pudong and Puxi. These two areas have a distinct difference as Pudong has more skyscrapers and more modern, advanced buildings, whereas Puxi showcase the Old Shanghai, keeping the Old Shanghai buildings, such as those in Tian Zi Fang. The way the Chinese managed to incorporate eastern into western, new into old in their way of preserving Shanghai's history is something that amaze me a lot. It is not easy to even keep a building, let alone so many of them and yet at the same time, create a new purpose, rekindle the fire in the old and battered building. Yangzhou's buildings are a lot less modernized as compared to Shanghai. However, most Yangzhou's buildings portrayed the image of the Tang, Ming or Qing dynasty. When walking in Dongquanmen and Dongguanjie, it is not difficult to picture people from these dynasties walking on the exact same piece of land that we were walking on. All these showcase the wit and intelligence of the Chinese in the area of tourism. With all these buildings to act as tourist attraction, it is not difficult for China to attract tourists and thus, boosting the already swelling economic. Also, China is made up of a very large piece of land. In Yangzhou, we visited the Shanghai Volkswagen factory. The factory was huge and has a lot of workers. I learnt that it is impossible for Singapore to provide such large area for a company as Singapore has a lack of land. Also, China has a large population. The workers' salaries can thus be lower as there are a lot of people who will need the job. With such a low cost, the profits earned will be greater and thus, China will be a better investment. Hence, Singapore will lose out as the factories may slowly move out of Singapore. This will eventually take a toll on Singapore's economic and thus leave a great impact on Singapore. Hence, I have learnt that whatever that is happening outside Singapore will leave an impact at Singapore too. Also, the air quality in Shanghai and Yangzhou were actually not as bad as what I thought it would be. Hence, the image of China has certainly changed for the better.

Secondly, I learnt how beautiful the Chinese were. They were friendly people who said hi to us even thought they may not have the idea of where Singapore is. Almost every place we visited, the Chinese would smile at us and took the initiative to make a small chat with us. They would often ask us where we were from and inquired further about Singapore. The students at the local exchange school were very warm and kind. They spoke to us as if we have known each other all our lives. They share with us their school life and even tried to translate it into English when we do not understand somethings. Their hospitality warms us. We will never how they take the meal box, fruits, soup and utensils for us during lunch. The teachers were kind and patient with us. They taught us their local culture about the Dragon boat Festival. They taught us how to make a net like necklace known as 长命缕. It was meant for children to wear on the day of the Dragon boat Festival to ward off the evil spirits. We never knew of all these in Singapore. Also, they taught us how to male 中国结. It is not easy to make one of that and the students helpers were extremely helpful. They explained the steps clearly and even helped us when we faced some problems. It is also at the local exchange school that we learnt of the way Yangzhou people made dumplings. Their way of wrapping dumplings is different from Singapore. We get hands-on experience on all these activities. The canteen staff were kind-hearted and were extremely patient. We were clueless as how to make the dumplings and they taught us again and again without complaints. The students there helped along as well. They even cooked the dumplings and gave them to us. The hospitality and kind-heartedness of the Chinese were fully portrayed here. At the paper-cutting museum, the ladies there gave us clear and specific instructions on how to cut the paper. They were hovering beside us, afraid that we might injure ourselves with the sharp scissors. Their care and concern for us will never be forgotten. All these were enough to showcase the nice Chinese, but there is one specific incident which I am very surprised and thankful for. When we visited the Daming temple, the pagoda was not included in the package. My friends and I decided to try to climb up the pagoda. The ticket was originally 20 yuan. However, after the lady at the counter learnt that we were students from Singapore, she decided to give us student price, which is 10 yuan. I was genuinely surprised by the kind-hearted lady as we had neither teaches/tour guides or our student cards with us at that moment. This incident taught me not to judge a book by its cover. The previous image of the Chinese in my mind was long gone before I even realized it. I can say for certain that I am now more aware of the Chinese values and beliefs. Their daily actions say a lot about their values and beliefs in treating others.

Last but not least, I am not a Singaporean but I am proud to be studying in this land that provides so many opportunities to explore the world beyond me. The Chinese did well in preserving and promoting their culture through tourism and perhaps Singapore can learn to organize more activities that will teach the future generation about the Chinese culture in Singpore.

This trip was like no other and it is also a memory for 2G who will be splitting class next year. The knowledge gained and the lessons learned will be always in my heart.

Personal Reflection - Zhang Yue(21)

Overall Reflection for the Trip ~Jeanette~

The trip has increased my knowledge of China. After going to Shanghai and Yangzhou, I have seen how different the lifestyles of Singaporeans and Chinese are. I have also gain more insight and understanding of the different values and beliefs of the Chinese in China. After this trip, I am now more appreciative of my life in Singapore, and am proud to be a Singaporean.

After going to China, my knowledge of China has increased greatly. I now understand China more, having experienced and witnessed for myself how China is like real life, instead of just reading from books or researching from the internet. For example, I have always imagined Shanghai to be a crowded, populated area and very polluted, considering how modernised Shanghai is. However, when I actually saw Shanghai for myself, I realised that it was actually a beautiful place, with many wonderful sights. From knowing only about Shanghai xiao long bao, I now know, and even first hand seen what makes Shanghai such a well-received tourist attraction. Shanghai's famous tourist attractions are the huang pu jiang and the bund. Huang pu jiang being a favourite tourist attraction is not a surprise. Riding on a boat along a river, with buildings and the beautiful skyline along the river banks puts anyone in a pleasant mood, and allows one to sit back and relax, and perhaps just reflect on what happened that day. The bund is another scenic spot. Like huang pu jiang, it is very modernised, surrounded by buildings and artefacts, each with a story behind its construction. For example, the vintage like European styled houses dates back to the French concession and the three memorial pillars which each signify three major wars in china, the Sino-Japanese wars, Opium Wars and the Chinese Civil wars. Both places are significant in the history of Shanghai, as a memory for the Shanghai people, of the times and experiences they went through during the periods of hardship for many Chinese. I feel that this is a commendable effort of the government in keeping a part of Shanghai's history. However, to keep up with the modern times, for the European houses, the interior has been renovated to cater to the needs of a modern society like Shanghai. Although the exterior is very well-maintained the interior does not reflect the history of Shanghai at all, the interior is mostly banks or offices, without a trace of the olden European interior styles. Although now the government can never bring back the interior design, but to boost china historical culture, the government can consider not renovating the interior of other historical artefacts so as to also preserve a piece of China's history.

In Yangzhou, I have also experience lifestyle in china. In Yangzhou and in Shanghai are quite different, though both are from the same country. In Shanghai everything is modern, and the roads were cramming with cars and heavy vehicles. However, in Yangzhou, many rode on bikes and scooters, and traffic was less heavy. The skyline were also different. At night, in Shanghai, the sky was filled with laser lights from buildings advertising their products. In Yangzhou, the sky was dark, and dull in comparison to Shanghai. However, it feels calmer in Yangzhou. Life seems laid back and more relaxing compared to Shanghai, as it has not been affected by the urbanisation and modernisation as much as many other places.

Compared to Shanghai, Yangzhou's efforts to preserve its historical culture is better. For example, many of the tourist attractions of Yangzhou are keep in nearly the same condition they were since the times of the dynasties, when the artefacts were constructed, like Lushi Mansion and Zhu Ziqing's residence. Although some parts have been renovated, like reconstructing the Lushi Mansion into a restaurant, the mansion is still largely intact. In Lushi Mansion, most furniture in the rooms have been replaced with restaurant kitchenware, however, the rest of the mansion is still like during the olden times. Similar to Lushi Mansion, Zhu Ziqing's residence is also very well-kept. In fact, besides the extension of an extra room to introduce Zhu Ziqing the place has hardly any changes to when it was build so long ago. Besides learning the efforts the government has to keep the valuable parts of history well-maintained, I have also learnt more about other factors of china, like its economy, and history and culture.

At the Beijing-hangzhou grand canal, I saw that by the banks, unlike huang up jiang, it was mostly trees and occasionally there will be buildings, mostly those kind of buildings constructed like in the past. Also, at one time, only one boat is riding along the river whereas in Shanghai there were about four to five boats. The canal is also a very important part of China's history. It was a main transportation route for transporting goods like salt. Through the boat ride along the Beijing-hangzhou grand canal, I understood and learn how important the rivers were for transportation in the past. It was important in selling and transporting goods, which is a significant economical factor. However, it is tragic as the canal had gone through a period of downfall, due to natural disasters like flooding. If there were not so many natural disasters, I believe Yangzhou would have also prospered like Shanghai, and we might not be able to experience a piece of historical china.

Another attraction of Yangzhou is the Shouxi lake. Shouxi lake is a smaller, imitation of the West lake, and much liked by emperors like Kangxi and Qianlong, for its beautiful scenery. The layout of rocks and plants gives people a calming feeling, allowing one to relax. Just like Shouxi Lake, Ge garden has a similar effect, although with a different background story. Ge Garden belonged to the richest merchant back then during those times. He had specially build this garden, and planted many species of his favourite plant bamboo. Bamboo symbolises that his household residents will have a strong moral backbone, and is strong and resilient. Another unique part about Ge Garden is that the words on its tablets have missing strokes. It is to symbolise and for the merchant to remind his children that nothing is perfect, therefore they need to keep striving for excellence. Both places have in common the beautiful sights they provide, and the rich history behind the places. It is indeed an eye opener.

Visits to the Chinese cutting paper museum, Dong Guan Jie, Dong Quan Men and block printing museum also gave me an insight to China's history. The Chinese cutting paper museum taught me the traditional art of paper cutting. It also amazes me how talented our ancestors are, being able to cut out exquisite designs. Dong Guan Jie is rather modern to me. Although the exteriors are well-kept, inside the shops are all modern, selling goods like key chains and soft toys. At Dong Quan Men, I truly experience how it was like to be in the older times. Everything there seemed like a community which has not caught up with the modern times of today. Although the residents living there have modern amenities like air-conditioners, the design and architecture of the area still seemed like a scene from the past. The block printing museum is a very modern museum, yet filled with history of china. It introduces us to a significant accomplishment of the Chinese, printing. It is not like our high tech printer, where with a button your document will be printed in seconds. In the past, the words first had to be carved out on a block. One mistake and all your hard work will be meaningless. After that, it will be checked through once before spreading ink and printing. It is a long, tedious process, patience being the key to producing any worthy work. Seeing how the lives of our ancestors were in the past makes me appreciative of the luxuries I have right now with everything at my convenience and disposal.

As for education, I also find myself very lucky. In the school I visited in Yangzhou, the students used a backboard with a smart board while in singapore I use a whiteboard and even have my own iPad.  Also, I am able to bring my phone to school, but the students in Yangzhou do not have the same privilege as me. Their education system is also more stressful than ours. Academics are their sole purpose of learning sometimes, and a large part of their lives revolves around getting good results. Unlike in singapore, in Yangzhou, their school ends at 6pm and they only have co-curriculum activities on Friday, and majority if the activities are academic based.  When the students reach home, they have to complete all their homework and excluding eating time and bathing time, they hardly have any free time before they are suppose to sleep. Their academic lives are hectic and stressful to me. Now, I feel that Singapore's education system is very good. More priority is placed on holistic development. Also, we learn about more cultures. In Yangzhou, the students only learn about the traditional Chinese culture like Wushu and Chinese painting. In Singapore, we get to learn western cultures like the guitar and painting and Asian cultures like Javanese music. In Yangzhou, they have only one food choice, and eat with only chopsticks. In singapore, we have a variety to choose from, and we can choose our choice of utensils. Even our toilets are cleaner and more convenient. Through these experiences, I realise how lucky I am to be a singapore student. I have learnt to appreciate the luxuries I have which I used to take for granted. I have also learnt important values and attitudes from the students. They are attentive and have an excellent learning attitude. During class, they do not talk at all, and sit properly, unlike me in singapore when I slouch and sometimes zone out of lesson. The students also participate quite actively in class, answering the teacher when the teacher poses a question. I hope to be able to pick up and learn the same good, eager learning attitude they have.

One of my favourite places in Yangzhou is the Daming temple. One thing I saw at the temple which touched me was the banner hung at the entrance which wished the students good luck for their "Gao kao", similar to the A levels in singpaore. Seeing how the community all wishes the best for the younger generation to score well is very heartening. In the temple, I learn more about the religion Buddhism and of the kind, benevolent acts by the gods. Also, in the temple, there was a ancestral hall to commemorate the retired scholar Ou Yang Xiu for his benevolent rule and his contributions to Yangzhou. Something which struck me was when I was at a shop selling items in the temple, a mother came in to buy a lucky charm for her son. She wanted a blessed lucky pouch with the words "金榜题名”, which means to score high marks in examinations and do well, for her son's Gao kao examinations. It gave me an insight as to how important academics are to the students. It also touched me, as I saw an act of parental love. A mother coming all the way to a temple to buy a pouch to bless her son in his examinations might be a simple act, but who else will do so for students? Only parents will place buying a lucky charm for their son as their priority, maybe family members will do so too, but parents will do anything for their children to excel in life. It might seem like a simple action, like parents getting something to bless their children is normal, but the amount of parental love I feel from this simple action warms my heart.

Lastly, another factor of china is its transportation system. In China, I took the bullet train. I feel that the service in china is excellent. The seats are comfortable and you can even turn the seats around, unlike in singapore where on the train it is cramp and suffocating during peak hours. Maybe it is because the train is a second-class train, and passengers need to have a ticket, therefore more high class. Something startling in China which I saw was that on the train, besides us, the other Chinese passengers were reading, unlike us who were using our electronics devices. This is an indication to show that us people in singapore are perhaps too sucked into the world of technology and thus forget about the simple pleasures of activities like reading.

From this trip, I see how china's culture has affected singapore too, like us students learning the Chinese culture like art. Also I learn that the Chinese in Yangzhou, due to their more laid back lifestyle, enjoy a simpler life in general. But the focus on academics might be more detrimental than helpful to the students. Singapore can learn from china too, by preserving the old buildings we have which contain our precious memories. I know that space is much needed in singapore, but preserving our memories are also important too. After this trip, I feel very proud to be a Singaporean. I am lucky to be able to experience so many luxuries like my school. I am not bounded by the need to score good results which is the only factor for my future. I am able to learn and experience so many different cultures and have a unique culture of my own, a fusion of many cultures. For example my language, Singlish. It might seem unruly to some, exotic to some, but familiar to me. A mixture of English, Chinese, Hokkien, Malay is what special to me. Speaking plain English or Chinese might be more formal and acceptable, but our own fusion of language is what makes singapore special, and not just foreigners whose ancestors moved here a long time ago. We are unique, and I am proud of that.

Report on The differences between the structure of Singapore andChina’s educational system.

Education system

The differences between the structure of Singapore and China’s educational system
China's education comprises of a compulsory nine-year education system. All students must fulfill an education level of from Primary 1 to Junior High 3. This will ensure that all Chinese have the basic education. In Singapore, all Singaporeans must receive at least 10/11 years of basic education, ranging from Primary 1 to Secondary 4/5. After these, most of the Singaporeans will proceed onto Junior College, Polytechnic or ITE. Other than the difference in the number of years in compulsory education system, China has a six-year primary school, three-year middle school and three-year high school education system. While in Singapore, there is a six-year primary school, four/five-year secondary school and two/three-year pre-university education system. Under comparison, China's education is a little bit fast-paced while Singapore's education provides more alternatives and ensure every Singaporean completes at least the secondary level of education. Nevertheless, both countries' ultimate goal is to ensure all citizens are educated.
China's main language is Chinese while Singapore's is English. Since the age of 3/4, Singaporean preschoolers will have already known the basic English words. One of Singapore's education policy is bilingualism. Hence, not only do the preschoolers in Singapore receive English education, their Mother Tongues are not forgotten too. To strive hard to achieve bilingualism, Singapore focuses on stressing students to be able to learn English well, but at the same time, being able to converse fluently in their Mother Tongues. Our own school, River Valley High School is an example in how Singapore's education policy works. Thus, there are also school titles such as SAP school, and RV is one of them. Whereas in China, the students only begin their English Language lesson when they are 10. The difference in the age of learning English results in the bilingualism skill.
Other than bilingualism, Singapore has another education policy, which is the financial assistance plan.Singapore strives to allow every student a chance to receive tertiary education. Singapore citizens can receive an account, Edusave, to aid in their learning. Annually MOE will add in $300 into their account for learning, workshops etc. However in China the tax funded higher education was abolished. This results in Chinese students having to compete to earn a place in the higher education in China.
